The Subhadra Yojana is a special program by the Odisha government to help women become financially strong and independent. Launched on September 17, 2024, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this scheme gives money to women to support their families, start small businesses, or meet daily needs. But who can apply for this scheme? In this article, we’ll explain the eligibility criteria for Subhadra Yojana in a simple and clear way, so you can understand if you or someone you know can benefit from it.

What is Subhadra Yojana?

Subhadra Yojana is a welfare scheme for women in Odisha aged 21 to 60 years. It gives ₹50,000 over five years, which means ₹10,000 every year. This money is sent directly to the women’s bank accounts in two parts: ₹5,000 on Raksha Bandhan (around August) and ₹5,000 on International Women’s Day (March 8). The goal is to help women from poor families improve their lives, learn digital skills, and become more independent. Over 1 crore women in Odisha are expected to benefit from this scheme.

Who Can Apply for Subhadra Yojana?

Not every woman in Odisha can apply for this scheme. There are specific rules to make sure the money goes to those who need it most. Let’s break down the eligibility criteria so it’s easy to understand.

1. Residency Requirement

You must be a permanent resident of Odisha. This means you should live in Odisha and have proof, like an Aadhaar card, showing you’re from the state. If you live in another state, you cannot apply for this scheme.

2. Age Limit

Only women between 21 and 60 years old can apply. For the 2024-25 financial year, this means women born between July 2, 1964, and July 1, 2003. The age is checked using the date of birth on your Aadhaar card. If you’re younger than 21 or older than 60 on July 1, 2024, you won’t be eligible.

3. Income Limit

The scheme is for women from families with low income. Your family’s yearly income should be ₹2.5 lakh or less. If you have a National Food Security Act (NFSA) or State Food Security Scheme (SFSS) card, you’re automatically eligible. Even if you don’t have these cards, you can apply as long as your family income is below ₹2.5 lakh per year.

4. Bank Account Requirements

To get the money, you need a bank account in your name that is linked to your Aadhaar card and enabled for Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). This ensures the money goes straight to you without any delays. You’ll also get a Subhadra Debit Card to use the money easily.

Who Cannot Apply for Subhadra Yojana?

Some women are not allowed to apply because the scheme focuses on helping those who don’t have other sources of money. Here’s who is not eligible:

  • Government Employees: Women working in state or central government jobs, public sector companies, or getting a government pension cannot apply. However, ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers, or similar workers can apply if they meet other criteria.
  • High-Income Families: If your family earns more than ₹2.5 lakh per year, you’re not eligible.
  • Taxpayers: Women who pay income tax are not allowed to apply.
  • Other Government Benefits: If you get ₹1,500 or more per month (or ₹18,000 per year) from other government schemes, like pensions or scholarships, you cannot apply.
  • Elected Officials: Women who are current or former Members of Parliament (MPs), Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs), or elected representatives in urban or panchayat bodies (except ward members or councillors) are not eligible.
  • Land or Vehicle Ownership: Families owning more than 5 acres of irrigated land, 10 acres of non-irrigated land, or a four-wheeler vehicle (except small commercial vehicles) are not eligible.

Special Cases to Know

  • Anganwadi and ASHA Workers: These women can apply if they meet other rules, but if their spouse has a government job, they cannot.
  • Multiple Women in a Family: If there are two or more eligible women in one family, all can apply and receive benefits.
  • Marital Status: Some sources say only married women can apply, but others don’t mention this, so it’s best to check with the official Subhadra portal or helpline.
