Hello everyone! Today, we’re going to learn about a fantastic scheme called the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, launched by our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. This scheme helps Indian families get free electricity by using solar power, which comes from the sun. It’s a clean and renewable energy source that can power your home and save money on electricity bills. Let’s explore how this scheme works, how you can apply, and what benefits it offers, all in simple language that’s easy to understand.

What is PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana?

The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is a government programme that aims to put solar panels on the rooftops of 1 crore (10 million) homes across India. It was launched on 13 February 2024 with a huge budget of Rs. 75,021 crore. The main goal is to give households up to 300 units of free electricity every month. By using solar panels, families can generate their own electricity, reduce their bills, and help the environment by using clean energy.

This scheme is part of India’s plan to use more renewable energy and reduce pollution. It also creates jobs for people who install and maintain solar panels. As of April 2025, over 95 lakh households have already registered, showing how popular this scheme is!

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana Subsidy Amount

The government offers a subsidy to make solar panels affordable. The subsidy depends on the size of the solar system you install. Here’s a table showing the subsidy amounts:

    Solar System Capacity

    Subsidy Amount

    1 kW

    Rs. 30,000

    2 kW

    Rs. 60,000

    3 kW and above

    Rs. 78,000

This subsidy is sent directly to your bank account after the solar panels are installed and verified. It covers up to 40% of the installation cost, making it easier for families to afford solar power.

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana Price

The cost of installing solar panels depends on the system’s size and your location. Here are the approximate costs before the subsidy:

    Solar System Capacity

    Estimated Cost

    1 kW

    Rs. 50,000 – Rs. 60,000

    2 kW

    Rs. 100,000 – Rs. 120,000

    3 kW

    Rs. 150,000 – Rs. 180,000

After the subsidy, your share is much lower. For example:

    • For a 1 kW system, you might pay Rs. 20,000–Rs. 30,000 after the Rs. 30,000 subsidy.

    • For a 2 kW system, you might pay Rs. 40,000–Rs. 60,000 after the Rs. 60,000 subsidy.

    • For a 3 kW system, you might pay Rs. 72,000–Rs. 102,000 after the Rs. 78,000 subsidy.

You can also get low-interest loans to cover the remaining cost, making it even more affordable.

Financing Options for PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana

One of the best parts of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is that you can get loans at low interest rates to cover the cost of installing solar panels. The State Bank of India (SBI) offers loans with very attractive terms.

    Loan Details from SBI:

    • For systems up to 3 kW:

      • Interest Rate: 7% per annum

      • Loan Amount: Up to Rs. 2,00,000

      • Margin: 10% of the project cost (but subsidy can cover this)

      • No Processing Fee

    • For systems above 3 kW up to 10 kW:

      • Interest Rate: 10.15% per annum

      • Loan Amount: Up to Rs. 6,00,000

      • Margin: 20% of the project cost

How You Can Get Zero Upfront Cost:

    • The government subsidy can cover the margin (e.g., 10% for systems up to 3 kW).

    • If the subsidy is disbursed quickly, you might not need to pay anything upfront.

    • The loan can be used to pay for the entire installation cost, and the subsidy will be credited directly to your bank account later.

    Other Loan Features:

    • Repayment Period: Up to 10 years, with a 6-month moratorium (no payments for the first 6 months).

    • No Prepayment Penalty: You can repay the loan early without extra charges.

    • Eligibility for Loans:

      • Indian citizen

      • Must own a house with a suitable rooftop

      • Valid electricity connection

      • No prior solar subsidies

With these financing options, installing solar panels becomes very affordable, and you can even start with zero upfront cost if everything is planned properly.

    How Solar Panels Work

Solar panels turn sunlight into electricity using small cells called photovoltaic cells. When sunlight hits these cells, it creates an electric current that can power your home. If you produce more electricity than you need, it can go back to the electricity grid, and you might even earn money for it!

    Advantages of Solar Energy

    Solar energy has many benefits:

    • Renewable: The sun will always be there, so solar energy never runs out.

    • Eco-Friendly: It doesn’t produce pollution or harmful gases.

    • Saves Money: After paying for installation, the electricity is free, saving you money.

    • Energy Independence: You rely less on the electricity company and avoid power cuts.

    Choosing the Right Solar Panel

When picking solar panels, keep these tips in mind:

    • Efficiency: Choose panels that convert more sunlight into electricity.

    • Warranty: Look for panels with a long warranty, like 25 years.

    • Cost: Compare prices from different vendors to get the best deal.

    • Certifications: Make sure the panels meet Indian quality standards.

    Maintaining Solar Panels

Solar panels need very little care. Just keep them clean by removing dust or leaves. Get them checked once in a while to make sure they’re working well.

The Future of Solar Energy in India

India wants to have 40 GW of rooftop solar power by 2026, and this scheme is a big part of that goal. By using more solar energy, India can become energy-independent and reduce pollution. The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is helping make this dream a reality.
